Inuit Economy

Gradually, in the economic and social fields, the missionaries have passed the reins to the Inuit themselves, while continuing to encourage the Co-operative Movement. In several locations they have been responible for the blossoming of native art consisting of quaint miniatures in ivory or sculptures in stelagnite. In support of the hunt and trapping as practiced by the Inuit, Bishop Robidoux, in April 1986, published an official circular defending the right of the indigenous to these essential activities which constitute, in spite of the arguments to the contrary, a source of occupation, food, revenue, healthy distraction and of people's identity itself.
